Follow up on My Story!

When We Started on USANA

When Patty and I started taking the USANA products on September 14, 2012, I weighed 247 lbs, got tired walking up a flight of stairs and was taking at least one 24-hr Claritin D per day and often two in an attempt to control my allergy and asthma symptoms.

Even though I was taking Claritin-D daily, I was having asthma attacks at least once per month that kept me in bed for the day That meant missing work and losing income. I carried an extra Claritin-D in my pocket at all times just in case one was not enough.

Because of my asthma problems and because of the type of work I was doing I was pretty sedentary.

I was 50+ lbs overweight, tired and had problems breathing most days.

What USANA Products Are We Taking Now?

Patty and I are currently taking the Health Pak 100 once per day each and a Biomega morning and evening.  We are only taking the Health Pak once per day, because I found that when I take it twice per day I have so much energy at night that I cannot sleep. Taking the Health Pak with a meal is essential and Patty and I often eat at 7pm or later because of her work schedule. Once I take my vitamins it takes me 6+ hours for the energy surge to wear off enough for me to sleep, so I was finding myself going to bed at 1-2 am.

Patty and I are also using one Nutrimeal as a meal replacement and a Nutrition Bar, Go Nuts and Berries is our favorite, as a snack. We then eat our normal diet. Understand that our diet is low-glycemic because Patty has type II diabetes. For most meals that means half a plate of meat and carbs and half a plate of salad when we are home.

Patty and I started walking 1.5 miles 3 times per week in early October once we realized that I was not having asthma problems.

Where Are We Now?

Today is December 27th, 2012

I have not taken a single Claritin-D since we started taking the USANA Health Pak. I still carry a Claritin-D with me, but it is the same one that I had in my pocket on September 14th. Over those 14 weeks I have had only ONE mild asthma incident and that was after not taking my Health Pak for two straight days.

I obviously have much more energy. LOL   So much that I can’t take the Health Pak twice per day.

Patty and I have started doing a full hour work out once per week in addition to our walks. Stretching, 30 minutes of cardio, light weights & iso-kinetics, and ground work.

I currently weigh 226.4 lbs. I have lost over 20 lbs and that is through the two biggest eating holidays of the year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Recently I went out and bought a new pair of jeans that was a size smaller. It was the first time I had gotten smaller in over 10 years!

I am ECSTATIC! And I am not done yet.

The Next Step for Us

January 7th USANA is starting a weight loss challenge – the USANA RESET Challenge: Destination Transformation. With over $200,000 in prizes, this contest will provide all of us with not only the best products to manage our weight effectively, but training and incentives.

My goal is to lose another 30 lbs over the 12 weeks of this RESET Challenge.

My last post was 12/6 so this one is more than a little overdue.

Last Friday, 12/14, I took a 3 mile walk and on my way back home I was hit by a SUV that was leaving Estates at Tanoan on Eubank. The black SUV, driven by a woman who was on her pink cell phone instead of paying attention to her surroundings, was moving slowly as it left the stop sign, but it was enough to knock me to the ground.

To make matters worse as I scrambled to my feet and got out of her way, she drove off and screamed at me that I should pay attention to cars. So if you know anyone in Tanoan Estates that drives a black SUV with a plastic hood protector, please tell her to put down the cell phone and be more careful. Next time she may seriously hurt someone.

By the time I finished the last mile of my walk my hip was hurting badly and because of that pain I have not been very active until yesterday. Probably should have went and had the hip looked at by a doctor, but please don’t tell Patty that.

Weight Loss

On 12/12 Patty and I had Alfred “Koollaid” Watson, a personal trainer, come to our apartment gym and put us through a workout. He kicked our behinds, but we felt good the next day other than small aches and pains. We committed ourselves to doing the workout he showed us 3 times per week with a walk 2 other days.

Then I got hit by an SUV and all that went out the window.

I have gained 2.2 pounds since my last post. Patty is holding steady at about 10 lbs lost since we started.

There is still lots of great news on the weight loss front. Since we began this process 12 weeks ago I have taken almost 3 inches off my waist and went out and bought jeans that are a full size smaller. YAY!

Patty and I am slowly working our way back into exercise. We walked 1/2 mile last night and I got in a 1/2 mile walk earlier today. Hoping to increase that to 3/4 mile tomorrow or 20 minutes on the recumbent exercise bike.

The USANA Business

We have been slowly working on the business during the Holiday season without as much cold calls, but we have found that you never know who will be interested.

At Costco on Saturday I was purchasing jeans and mentioned to the cashier that it was nice to buy jeans a size smaller than the last time. She and the person doing the boxing asked how, so I gave them our card. It was incredibly busy or I would have taken more time.

As I was walking away one of the people selling the membership upgrades asked me if he could have one of our cards and he walked with us asking questions, so I got his contact information and set up a time to follow up with him.

At our apartment complex’s Christmas party we spoke with several people that seemed very interested including one that I dropped off samples too today. The apartment manager suggested we put flyers for the USANA Reset Challenge in the workout center.

We also got a new Preferred Customer from one of my Search Engine Optimization &  Social Media clients.

Most importantly, Patty and I qualified for a check this past week!


What I have learned

About Weight Loss

Consistent exercise, even if it is just the short 1.5 mile walk we had been doing, is critical to weight loss. We are really only doing the maintain phase, replacing one meal per day with a Nutrimeal shake, but that combined with the exercise we were doing had resulted in 22 pounds lost in 11 weeks.

Even if I cant walk as far this week because of the pain in my hip from being hit by the SUV, I am still going to walk daily.

About Building the USANA Business

As in weight loss, consistency is the key. Patty and I have committed to talking to 2 new people about the business every day and its paying off. We also found out that even small comments can lead to opportunities to share the business or the products.

Why We Built Our USANA Blog on WordPress

Why We Built our USANA Blog on WordPress

Alot of people have asked me why we created our blog on WordPress, a free platform.

Some background on why they have asked:

Before USANA, Richard’s main source of income for the past 3 years was building and maintaining websites as well as SEO, Social Media and Content Marketing. So people are used to his websites being extremely professional and self-hosted.

So why did he build our USANA blog on WordPress, a free platform?

Two Words – Its duplicable

Anyone can sign up for a free wordpress account, choose a free theme, and build a blog all by themselves.  You can build YOUR USANA blog on WordPress without needing money or a professional webmaster to build and maintain the site.

Sure, when you go Emerald or Diamond you will probably want to spend a little cash and have your site updated, but the biggest changes you will see us make are being self-hosted so Richard can do more with Google Analytics (which is free) and maybe going from a free theme to a $99 Studio Press Theme (Richard’s preferred WordPress theme family for his clients websites).

But we wanted to show that anyone can build a nice looking blog with all the bells and whistles for free.

The Key to Network Marketing is being Duplicable

The 1st people will think when you approach them about the business is “Can I do what she is doing?”  Can they duplicate what you are doing?

The 1st thing your new distributors will ask about building their new business is “Can I do what my mentor is doing to build my business?” Can they train their new people like you are training them?

If they answer is no, they are not going to join you in the USANA business or they are not going to stick in the business.

So that is why Richard built this blog using So the people in our organization will see that they too can do this.

Richards Update – Weight Loss and USANA Business Building

I had several messages asking how I did last week, so I want to apologize for not getting this posted sooner.

Patty got back in town on Monday night and since then we have been busy. Thursday Patty worked a 12 hours shift and Friday I had 2 clients and working with Dr Norm Dawson on his social media and then we both attended a USANA Sense Spa Party. So… its late.

Congratulations to Barbara and Norm Dawson for achieving their first week of Emerald qualification! Next step is Diamond.

So here is my report.

Weight Loss

I lost 1 pound this week to bring my total to 21.6 lbs lost in 11 weeks.

This past week I have lots of excuses for not walking, but the bottom line is I only got in 3 walks. I think that is the big difference from last week. Goal this next week is to get back on track by losing 3+ lbs.

Or maybe I will gain a little weight to make my loss in the USANA RESET Challenge that starts January 7th that much more dramatic. LOL.

USANA Business Building

Last week I thought we had qualified for a check, but I must have been mistaken. Volume is there, but …

Not sure what happened.  Have to place an order before the 14th, so maybe we will get it then.

Slow week on approaches, Patty did most of them, but this week I have rocked it out on follow ups.  Seem to see a little momentum building and the calls are getting easier to make. That 500 lb phone is getting lighter.

Maybe its like weight lifting. The more I pick it up, the stronger I am getting so it feels lighter.

Our goals are still the same. Walking across the stage in August as a Gold Director. Going to have to pick it up and start contacting 10 new people per day.

What I have learned

Weight Loss

Consistency counts. Its more important what I do on a daily basis over time than what I do in any one day. I need to take a walk more often and be consistent in doing other exercise  every day.

This week Patty and I have a personal trainer coming to show us what exercises to do to accelerate our gains in health and weight loss. One thing he told me already is that as I increase muscle tone that my weight loss will slow and we will be measuring fitness and size (waist, stomach, chest) as well as weight.

The USANA Business & Personal Development 

The phone wont bite.

Most people don’t bite. (and the ones that do you don’t want to work with anyway.)

Its as important or more important to work on who you ARE than what you do. Read, listen and study motivating, positive materials daily. They will lift you up, help you think well of yourself and keep you going through the grind.

Like owning any business, building a network marketing business is not easy. It IS worth it. Stick it out. The compound effect will take hold and momentum will kick in.

If You Can Dream It, You Can Achieve it in USANA

Its been a good week overall. Both in terms of getting back on track for weight loss and for building our USANA business.

I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday refreshing and reloading and then had a productive week. The only downer has been the death of one of my mentors, a man I respected immensely, Zig Ziglar. The quote above is in his honor.

So here is my progress report.

Weight Loss

I lost 3.2 pounds for a total of 20.6 lbs in 10 weeks. I am back on the weight loss pace to make my long term goal – 2 lbs per week.USANA Go Nuts n Berries Bars

Even with Thanksgiving and the requisite huge meal with family to start off the week I stayed on track by making good choices for our meals, drinking Nutrimeal meal replacement shakes once per day, snacking on the Go Nuts n Berries bars, drinking at least five 20 ounce glasses of water each day, and walking three times during the week.

My wife Patty will be in San Diego for the next 4 days, so one of two things will happen.

Blakes Lotaburger

  • Either I will just not eat much of anything because she is not here.  Patty is an incredible cook and I have become totally dependent on her to cook.
  • Or I will eat at least one meal a day at Blakes Lotaburger (mmm Green Chile Cheeseburgers) or some other equally fattening fast food place.

I am still focused on losing 2.4 lbs by next Thursday morning’s weigh in. Guess I am just going to have to walk every day. 🙂

USANA Business Building

Patty and I just qualified for our 2nd check! YAY!

Its not a huge one, but getting any size check shows progress and we will take all the wins we can get.

We are finding that what I remembered about the business still holds 100% true, it takes about 6 contacts with a person on average before they decide to join us in the business.

During the past week, last 3 days really, we have been prospecting mostly in our warm market and have invited a bakers dozen and had three presentations.  Our results were one person who is ordering Rev3, one who wants to try some samples that I will deliver on Monday, follow ups scheduled for next Monday & Tuesday for people that have committed to watching the video, and one that said he had watched a couple of segments of the video and we could talk more the next time I bring a check in to deposit (yes, he works at the bank). Of course there were several NOs, but the positives far outweighed them.

What I Have Learned

Weight Loss

3 steps forward, one step back is ok. Its about the compound effect of continuing to eat right, use the USANA products, drink enough water and exercise.

After 10 weeks I am on pace to reaching my weight loss goals and feeling more energetic than I have in years. Poor Patty is having to beat me off with a stick. 😛

During a 2 week time frame when nearly every person in Patty’s office and every relative I have come in contact with (and I have alot of relatives in Albuquerque) has been sick and missing time at work, I have not caught a single sniffle.

Building Our USANA Business

KEEP GOING!! Its not about a day or even a week. While the network marketing business is still the simplest path to prosperity in the history of capitalism, simple does not mean easy or fast. (Hat tip to Mark Yarnell)

Success in network marketing is survival of the fittest at work. Well over 60% quit in the first year, but the earning potential for those that stick it out is exponentially higher than anything else I could be doing with my time.

Yes the MLM business is slow at first for most of us, but its like a snowball rolling down a hill. An even better analogy is doubling a penny every day for a month. On day two you have two cents. On day ten you have just $5.12. After 3 weeks you still only have $10,000. But on Day 30 you have more than $10 million dollars.   $10,737,418.24 to be exact.

Keep the effort up, keep consistent and keep going, and the payoff is huge.

Richards Update – Thanksgiving Edition – Weight Loss and USANA Business Building

Ok, I am more than a little angry at myself. Things have not gone as planed this week for whatever reason. I will spell it out in more detail as we go along.

Wednesday I was actually a little depressed. I am over it now and moving through the stages from depression, to anger to motivated to make sure it doesnt happen again.

So here is my progress report:

Weight Loss

Weight Loss - Man on scale

I gained 2.2 lbs and that was BEFORE Thanksgiving meals.

Why? Patty and I only walked once in the entire week. Still drank one shake a day, but a combination of not eating the right things and too little exercise resulted in a 2 lb weight gain. GRRRRRRR

My goal is getting under 200 lbs and I am not going to get there backsliding one week per month.

Going to get back on it this week. Started out Friday with a shake and will eat a salad for lunch and a Go Nuts and Berries bar for a snack.

USANA Business Building

This one was even more frustrating than the weight gain because I thought I had flat out  rocked it on prospecting. I made 96 phone calls to people I met at professional networking events. 84 new calls and a dozen follow up.

I got 32 people that answered the phone, 21 flat out NOs and 8 that had no time to talk. 3 said call back after Jan 1st, but really didn’t hear much.

I did have 4 people that watched the online Health and Freedom presentation on my USANA website, but I was unable to reach any of them to follow up.

Thoroughly frustrating.

What did I learn?Weight Loss - Glass of water

Weight Loss
Exercise, water, and salads are extremely important to weight loss and to blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are the enemy of weight loss even if the caloric intake isnt as high as other foods.

The USANA Business
Sometimes its not about what you do, its about being congruent. So today and Saturday I am resting and recharging by listening to prospecting training and reading some things to help me figure out who I want to BE, rather than what things do I need to do. I figure that Monday to Wednesday I was doing the things I need to do. Now I need to make sure I was saying the right things and focus more on who do I need to be.
