Business Plan for your Network Marketing Business

There are 3 things every successful business must have:

  • A vision
  • A business plan
  • A marketing budget

Typically in a small business, marketing accounts for 15% or more of projected gross sales revenues. Not profits, sales revenue.

So what is your projected sales volume?

Ahhh, the catch-22 for most in our profession. In network marketing its almost unheard of to find someone who has an actual written business plan with all the items that are found in business plans for other businesses – Your product or service, the overall market for your product or services, your target market, the competition, your projected sales, Your projected revenue and earnings, your sales and marketing methodology, a budget for your marketing.

Do you have a business plan? If not, why not? Is it that you have not taken your network marketing business seriously? That you are not treating it like a business, you are treating it like a hobby?

Well, it’s time you started treating it like a business, so it can pay you like a business.

Let’s Take a Look at an Outline of My Business Plan for the Next 3 Months:

Industry(s) – Health and Wellness

Products –     Customized Nutritional Supplements/Sports Nutrition – $37 billion in the US

Products –     Weight Loss/Weight Management – $65 billion in the US

Products –     Energy Drinks – $60 billion in the US

Products –     Anti-Aging Skin Care/Personal Care – $11 billion in the US

Target Market – Baby Boomers; Professionals – Insurance, Real Estate, Executives and Management, and small business owners; Working Moms

Competition – Grocery Store vitamins; Monster, 5 Hour Energy and Red Bull; Herbalife, Nutrisystems, and 1 million diets on the bookshelf; I’m not sure but I will find out if I start focusing on skin care, I know we are much better and less expensive than most I see advertised.

Projected sales – Q1 2016 – 120,000  SVP (In USANA, we see sales in terms of sales volume points that are then converted to dollars depending on the market you are in)

Projected sales revenue – $12,000.00

Sales/Marketing Methodology – Go Pro Recruiting Mastery Techniques, Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Video Blogging/Periscope

Marketing Budget – $1800.00

What Do I spend My Marketing Budget On

There are many things you can be spending your marketing budget on. Samples are the number one expenditure in Network Marketing. If you are not putting your products in the hands of potential customers regularly you are not selling much. Event costs are another area to budget for. Not just the rental of a room, but AV needs, samples, decorations, and prizes. Business cards are another marketing cost. How about flyers to advertise your events?

So now that you know what one looks like, its time to take your Network Marketing business seriously and treat it as a business by writing out a business plan and a marketing plan today.

What I Do

What is your reaction to robo dialing telemarketing calls

Patty and I include our contact information on this website and we have received calls and emails from many nice, intelligent people that are either interested in the USANA products and opportunity after reading our blog posts or they are well meaning people that call us offering a chance to try the products or opportunity they represent.

While we are feel that USANA offers not only the best products in its industry and also the best opportunity for long term residual income, we welcome calls and emails of both types. We want to connect with people that are excited about and dedicated to the network marketing profession.

What Everyone Hates

What we have a hard time with is all the people that think its ok to send us spam or worse yet, to use a robo dialer to call us. Seriously, would you join a company or even more importantly an individual who is doing something that is as universally hated as recorded telemarketing calls or robo dialing? Is that a way to build your business that:

  • Encourages people to follow your example?
  • Builds a team of people dedicated to you and your company’s vision?

Personally, I would never join a team that is doing something I dislike as much as I dislike recorded telemarketing calls and email spam.

Network Marketing is a Profession Built on Relationships

In network marketing the reason people buy your products or join your business is because of the relationship you build with them. They buy your vision for the future in the profession or the efficacy of your products because they trust you and because they trust you, they trust the information you are sharing with them.

Do You Trust People or Marketing Processes You Dont Like? 

Build Trust, Find a Need, THEN Offer a Solution

The process to follow to long term success in the network marketing profession is by building a relationship that has trust, finding out if there is a need for your product or opportunity and then offering a solution that fills their need.

When people know you care about them and trust that you are offering something you believe in and also believe will solve a problem they are experiencing, they are much more likely to use the product and join your business. And that is what you want isn’t it?

I returned from the 2014 USANA International Convention in Salt Lake City to find this powerful article in our email today.  It was so insightful and inspiring that I had to share it.

Your Brain on Hope by Dana Wilde

Have you ever met that network marketer who is brand new to their business and just bursting with enthusiasm? The one who is SO filled with excitement that everything he or she touches seems to turn to gold? Do you ever remember feeling like that yourself?

I remember hearing the president of my direct sales company call it, “ignorance on fire.” We don’t know what we’re doing, but we’re doing it with such gusto that we meet with success after success.

The reason for this phenomenon actually has its roots in brain science. When your brain is in a positive emotional state, it’s more resourceful. You literally get better ideas.

In addition, when you are in a positive emotional state, the reticular activating system in your brain is filtering through all of the available information in the world around you and matching you up with the right people at the right time. You’re having better results because you are “tuned in” to all the best opportunities around you.

Most of us want to feel like that enthusiastic newbie. Sometimes we look at our businesses and wonder, “Where has my mojo gone and how can I get it back?” We end up feeling frustrated with our business because it’s growing too slow or maybe we feel stuck or like we’re spinning our wheels.

Well, if you’ve ever felt like this, then I have good news for you. You don’t have to be bouncing off of the walls with excitement to start to gain some traction in your business. All you really need is a little “hope.”

When you are in a frustrated, stressed, or overwhelmed state of mind, you are literally stifling the creative pathways in your brain. In order to open up your brain and get your mojo flowing again, you MUST shift yourself to a positive state of mind and the entryway to that shift is the feeling of HOPE.

Hope is enough.

When you put yourself into a feeling of “hope” – and remain there as consistently as possible – you can accomplish great things quickly and easily, even if you never make it to feelings of enthusiasm, passion, or joy.

Many entrepreneurs have mood swings between the emotions of frustration and hope. Typically, they have small successes quickly followed by small setbacks. The typical entrepreneur will focus on the small success and feel good and then they will focus on the small setback and feel bad. Ping-ponging back and forth between these two emotions, they never really gain any traction, which is why many businesses grow incrementally instead of by leaps and bounds.

This is why getting to a feeling of hope is so important. If you can get yourself to a feeling of hope-and stay there consistently-you create a resourceful brain that finds solutions for you.

You start to have small successes, and if you focus on those successes and ignore the setbacks, it becomes easier to stay in a feeling of hope. If you stay with hope long enough, then the successes pile up and it becomes easier to have feelings of belief, positive expectation, knowing, joy, and appreciation.

And it all starts with hope.

So if you’re feeling frustrated with your business, how can you start feeling more hopeful right now? You can start with what I call, The Hope Exercise.

The Hope Exercise is really simple. It’s designed to help you focus on statements that generate the feeling of hope. In other words, if you “think” hopeful thoughts long enough, you will automatically start to “feel” hopeful.

Here’s how it works:

Whenever you feel frustrated or overwhelmed, just pause, take a deep breath and start saying phrases or statements beginning with the words … “I hope.”

Your statements might sound something like this:

“I hope I start to feel better.”
“I hope I find a way to get my business moving.”
“I hope I find a method that makes my business easier.”
“I hope I get some people to buy my product.”
“I hope someone walks up to me out of the blue and buys something.”
“I hope I make a lot of money in this business.”
“I hope I attain my goals.”
“I hope I start to feel more positive.”
“I hope I my business grows this year.”
“I hope things improve.”
“I hope I can think of another hope sentence.”

When you’ve said your hope statements a few times, pay close attention to how you “feel.” If you find your emotions dipping back into frustration again, keep applying your hope statements. This will ward off counter-productive thinking right away. It will get you quickly back into that hopeful feeling again!

Keep saying your new “hope phrases” until you experience emotional movement towards genuine feelings of hope.

Another important note: When you first start using hope statements you’ll find, though you’re making hopeful or optimistic statements, they might sound and feel more like frustration than hope to you. However, if you say your statements for several minutes, you’ll begin to feel your emotions soften, your mood lighten, and you’ll quickly start feeling better.

Better thoughts translate into better feelings and better feelings translate into a more resourceful brain and a more successful business.

While many of us would like to feel like that enthusiastic newbie all day, every day, you’ll soon realize that your “brain on hope” is a powerful force for positive change in your business and in your life.

Hope is enough

Here is another of the emails we have received recently that has a message so powerful I have to share it with you.

The author is an unknown MJ. If anyone knows who wrote it originally I would love to pass that information and a link to MJ’s website along to you as well. Its made a huge difference in my attitude and the actions I have taken today. I hope it does the same for you:


 So I’ve been trapped in an airport

…and while I’m waiting for the weather to clear up, I wanted to write you a quick note to pump you up about your Network Marketing business.

You see, I’m a huge fan of Network Marketing. I’ve taught (literally) hundreds of thousands of people how to become more successful in Network Marketing by improving their prospecting, their presentations and their closing.

And I LOVE teaching all of you!

And I LOVE that you love me teaching you. Heck, my first book has sold over 200,000 copies to date so I know there are a TON of satisfied students who are working hard to change their lives with my materials.

So I want to share a story that will pump you up and get you reinvigorated to go out and change your life today:

A good friend of mine who is a very successful leader in a well-known Network-Marketing company was not always so successful.

He lived in a small town outside of Cleveland and was on the verge of losing his car, his house… Bankruptcy seemed inevitable.

Lucky for him, his upline explained the price of the promise to him.

The promise was: “this business can set you free financially in one to three years.”

The price is: “to succeed, you have to face and conquer four major enemies.”

My friend (we’ll call him Jim) agreed and invited 200 friends over to his house (which was almost in foreclosure) to watch a video…

80 said NO. And that was…

Enemy #1: REJECTION

He thought “well, my upline warned me about that but I still have 120 people who are coming over.”

Guess what? Only 70 showed up. Jim had just encountered…

ENEMY #2: DECEPTION

Jim thought “no problem, my upline warned me about that… at least those 70 watched the video and will want to join my business!”

Guess what? 57 said “not interested.” Which was…

ENEMY #3: APATHY

Jim thought “well, 13 people DID sign up, that’s AWESOME!

Guess what? 12 of those ‘awesome’ people dropped out of the business shortly thereafter and that was Jim’s experience with…

ENEMY #4: ATTRITION

Because of attrition, Jim had just ONE serious person who was going to build a business in his downline.

Guess what?

To this day, that single distributor earns Mark over $50,000 per month.

Here’s my question to you:

If you knew that just ONE person was going to make you $50,000 per month, how many phone calls would you make to find them?

How many presentations would you show prospects?

How much time and energy is $50,000 per month from ONE PERSON worth to you?

This story is NOT at all unique in the business of Network Marketing

I know it because I’ve heard the stories from my students and seen this exact scenario play out all over the globe, every single day.

But here’s the catch:

You have your own set of odds… and you won’t know what they are until AFTER YOU’VE SUCCEEDED!

You Can either give up and assume the business doesn’t work…

OR, recognize that you are working through your own numbers

Richard’s Update on Weight Loss and USANA : March 4 2013

Richard’s Update on Weight Loss and USANA

Its been an exciting and productive week. This week Patty and I have learned more about our health and about how to build our USANA business than we have in the past 5 months.

Monday evening we were on Tony Daum’s Revolutionize Your Business leadership training call and we have been doing a book study of John Maxwell’s Failing Forward. Major breakthroughs. MAJOR breakthroughs!

This week I also started doing lifestyle prospecting. In other words talking to people that I come into contact with on a regular basis just living my life. Its amazing how easy it is to prospect when the people already know how you have treated them in the past and the type of person you are, rather than straight up cold calls.

Then Patty and I had the opportunity to spend Friday and Saturday in training with Tony Daum. Friday was a personal development training and Friday night was the USANA Vision Tour. POWERFUL!

Then Saturday was a USANA Super Saturday with the morning being a health workshop and the afternoon being a training on how to build your business.

I have already put into practice things I learned this weekend and more are coming.

Woooooooo Hooooooooo!

Weight Loss

I have taken off 15 lbs in 7 weeks. In addition I have taken 6 inches off my waist. Like I posted last week, I am wearing a size 36 pair of jeans!

15 lbs more to take off in the next 5 weeks and I will achieve my goal of weighing 200 lbs. I’m on my way!

The USANA Business

Do you know how exciting it is to see volume in your organization and realize that you have never even met the person the volume is coming from? This week we have looked at our DLM and realized that we didn’t know the person that the volume increase we were seeing had come from. Someone else had signed them up as a distributor or preferred customer. That is POWERFUL!

The past week has been one of AHA moment after AHA moment for me and for Patty.

The Tony Daum training has us both excited and clearer on who we want to be and how we are going to get there.  I am more passionate about this business and life in general than I have been in years. So lets kick this thing in high gear!

In the coming week I have committed myself to introducing USANA to 10 people in person or on the phone, doing 2 presentations (online or in person) and following up with 10 people. Patty and I went shopping yesterday and I bought two pairs of pants. Size 36.

Patty had to convince me to buy Wranglers instead of Walmart brand because I was not quite sure I would fit in a 36.

You see, Patty and I have been married for 10 years and we met on May 12th, 2001. In that entire time I have never worn a size 36. When I started using USANA in September of 2012 I was wearing a 42 and they were tight after a big meal.

Weight Loss

My first weigh in for the USANA Reset Weight Loss Challenge was on January 11th. That day I weighed 229.8 lbs.

This morning I weighed in at 115.8 lbs. I have taken off 14 lbs in 6 weeks. In addition I have taken 6 inches off my waist. Me wearing a size 36 pair of jeans!

15.8 lbs more to take off in the next 6 weeks and I will achieve my goal of weighing 200 lbs. I’m on my way!

The USANA Business

The past week has been one of AHA moments for me. A simple question asked in a personal training session with our mentors Dr. Norm and Barbara Dawson, and I suddenly saw the segue I was missing in my approach & invite.

A training with Eric Worre and I saw exactly how the prospecting process needed to be done. My approach had been way to salesy and too long. 7 simple steps that completely changed my thinking on prospecting.

This week we got another check in the mail. Yes, we still get checks. I know we can get direct deposit and have our money faster, but there is just something about going to the mailbox and seeing that envelope that is really satisfying.

In the coming week I have committed myself to introducing USANA to 20 people, doing 2 presentations (online or in person) and following up with 10 people.
